Filipina chef Johanne Siy has been named Asia’s Best Female Chef at Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards in Singapore.

The head chef of Singaporean establishment Lolla was announced this year’s winner of the special award ahead of the reveal of the annual best-of list in March 2023.

Born in Dagupan, Philippines, Johanne Siy started a corporate career before realizing her dream of becoming a chef. She initially moved from the Philippines to Singapore to work for a major corporation.

Siy eventually pursued a career as a chef and headed to New York, where she studied at The Culinary Institute of America and learned from culinary giants like Chef Eric Ripert and Chef Daniel Boulud at Le Bernardin and Café Boulud.

After building up her culinary expertise and working in some of the best kitchens around the world, Siy returned to Singapore and took on the position of head chef at Lolla, one of the country’s premier dining destinations.

Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards lauded the chef for reshaping the restaurant and turning it “into a produce-driven haven for meticulously crafted dishes, inspired by her experiences across Europe and North America as well as her Filipino upbringing.”

With Siy at the helm of Lolla, the restaurant debuted at No. 75 on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2022 extended ranking.

As Asia’s Best Female Chef 2023, Siy hopes to inspire more women to enter the hospitality industry and boost female representation in fine dining.

“I am grateful for this platform that allows me to reach out to so many young chefs to hopefully inspire them to overcome barriers and push the boundaries,” Johanne Siy wrote in an Instagram post on February 10, 2023.

“I want to shine the spotlight on the work of remarkable women in our industry, in the hopes that one day we as a community can thrive and reach new heights by leveraging the symbiosis that a truly egalitarian workforce brings,” Siy added.

Siy and this year’s winners of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards will be honored at an awards ceremony to be held on March 28, 2023, in Singapore.

Siy was earlier named the MKN Female Chef of the Year at the prestigious World Gourmet Awards in 2021.

Filipino chef Margarita Fores was named Asia’s Best Female Chef for 2016.

Three Filipino dining spots made it to the 100 Asia’s Best Restaurants last year.
