Can This Filipino-Made App Finally Solve Train Arrival Woes for Metro Manila Commuters?

Metro Manila commuters now have a Filipino-developed solution to train delays with Rush PH, a web app that estimates LRT and MRT arrival times through crowdsourced reports.

Rush PH was developed by Filipino software engineer Joshua Bumanlag, a Magna Cum Laude graduate in Computer Science from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) and an alumnus of Don Bosco Technical Institute of Makati.

Even before graduating in 2024, Bumanlag led tech communities as CEO of the Google Developer Student Clubs PLM and served as a Notion Campus Ambassador. He interned with SM Investments Corporation and ING Hubs Philippines, where he now works full-time as a software engineer.

Built with accessibility in mind, Rush PH is a mobile-first, web-based app that uses crowdsourced reports to estimate train arrival times on Metro Manila’s LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3. It runs directly on mobile browsers — no download needed — making it ideal for commuters using low-spec smartphones. An internet connection is required, but the lightweight platform ensures quick and easy access for daily users.

The primary use of the app is to let users know how long it would take before the next train arrives at their chosen station.

Submissions of train sightings by users are utilized instead of relying on official estimates or static schedules. These are utilized to make generalized estimated arrival times. Currently, these estimated arrival times have an 81% accuracy rate. To ensure data reliability and avoid false inputs, email verification is required when submitting reports.

Unlike Google Maps, which similarly presents estimated time arrivals for trains, glitches due to trains being late or not arriving at all sometimes happen. This is the importance of Rush PH’s crowdsourcing that helps report such incidents.

Unlike other apps, Rush PH focuses on time estimation without trying to complicate and overwhelm it by integrating other features. The clean interface ensures that it is easy to navigate for users without causing confusion. Even senior citizens claim the app to be useful.

For commuters unfamiliar with the train stations in Metro Manila, the app serves beyond estimating time, as it also shows users a chronological list of the train stations, serving as a guide to help them determine how many stations they will pass before arriving at their destination.

The PLM report on July 4, 2025, says the PLM alumnus developer hopes to expand the coverage of the application by including carousel jeepneys, the Philippine National Railway (PNR), and provincial routes.

Aside from Rush PH, the developer also aims to have a separate app that focuses on guiding first-time commuters navigating places that feature tips, sample itineraries, and interactive challenges.

Joshua Bumanlag also stated that the project will soon welcome volunteer developers to contribute.

In line with its goal of being accessible, he shared that he has no immediate plans to monetize the applications. However, to sustain its future operations, it is open to running advertisements.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Bumanlag also compared the systems in Singapore and Thailand that have an estimation when the next train arrives which motivated him to do something similar for the Philippines.
