The Quincentennial Commemorations of the Philippines’ logo will be lit up as a giant solar art installation at the Luneta to mark the 100 days countdown. Photo of solar art being built courtesy of Liter of Light and Omell Cruz.

A giant solar artwork illuminating the Philippines’ 500 years logo is lighting up the Luneta Park in Manila to signal the countdown to the Victory at Mactan’s quincentennial anniversary.

Liter of Light’s Light it Forward campaign, the Asia Pacific award-winning project that hand-builds solar lights for donation to remote communities without electrical supply, is again lending thousands of lamps to create the fourth large-scale art installation at the Luneta Park in Manila on Sunday, January 17, 2021.

The homegrown global solar lighting movement’s new giant solar art installation continues the three previous tributes to honor Filipino heroes battling the Covid-19 pandemic around the world. Liter of Light created the largest solar Philippine flag on Andres Bonifacio Day, November 30, 2020, the iconic image of Jose Rizal on December 30, and the largest solar rosary in the world on January 6.

Liter of Light’s global founder Illac Diaz encouraged Filipinos to join the January 17 countdown through social media posts showing the 500 years logo while proclaiming Filipino heroism. Here’s how.

“On January 17, 100 days from that 500 year anniversary, we are once again inviting you to join us as we create the largest solar commemorative logo to honor the victory and humanity of our ancestors,” said Diaz in a video message.

“Throughout 2021, we will maximize the 500 years celebrations to inspire our new generation of heroes and defenders of our planet, through solar activities and installations done in partnership with the National Quincentennial Committee,” the Liter of Light leader pledged.

The Edison Award winner asked people to move for victory and humanity against environmental destruction and climate change.

“What will our next 500 years look like? The threats to life as we know it no longer have the faces they did 500 years ago.

“Rising sea temperatures, more extreme weather conditions, and global health pandemics – these are the new challenges that require us once again to stand up to defend our land – its natural ecosystems, our cultural heritage, and the protection of our planet.

“Thank you for helping us to Light It Forward. Thank you for joining us in remembering our heroes, and inspiring the next generation of heroes.”
