Jophel Ybiosa, an 8-time Ani ng Dangal Awardee for Visual Arts of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, won first prize in the Culture category of the 3rd Chromatic Awards announced on December 22, the first time a Filipino won the top prize.

The cruise photographer’s winning work has been published in the Gallery of Winners and the Official Book of Chromatic Awards. He has also received the right to use the winner badge and was given a 1st Prize Winner Certificate from the international competition of color photography open to both professionals and amateurs.

Jophel Ybiosa’s winning photograph is “The Mud People Festival in Nueva Ecija”, an image depicting the celebration and shot on June 24, 2018.

Mud People has captioned: “Devotees wear dried banana leaves and cover themselves with mud then offer a prayer or pay homage to Saint John the Baptist. According to a local legend, the Japanese soldiers were about to execute the villagers of Aliaga during World War II. But in the midst of a downpour, Japanese soldiers suddenly changed their minds. Afterward, the villagers celebrated by rolling around the muddy ground. There´s a belief that being saved from the execution is a miracle of Saint John the Baptist”.

Another shot of Mud People was named the 1st Place Winner in the Events Photography Competition of The Society of International School and Event Photographers in the United Kingdom and won a Gold Award. A black and white version of the photo was named the 2nd Place Winner in the Events section of the Tokyo International Foto Awards announced on December 27.
