Broadway royalty Lea Salonga returned to the Tony Awards stage as one of the celebrity presenters for the 74th annual ceremony held at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York.

Salonga won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical in 1991 for her role as Kim in “Miss Saigon” and was last seen on the Tony Awards stage when the musical “Once On This Island” in which she starred won the award for Best Musical Revival in 2018.

The Filipino music icon joined a star-studded lineup of guests that included Filipino-American actor Darren Criss, Jennifer Holliday, Andrew Garfield, Cyndi Lauper, Norm Lewis, John Lithgow, and Lindsay Mendez, among others.

The annual Tony Awards for Broadway productions during the 2019–20 season were hosted by Audra McDonald and Leslie Odom Jr., who revealed the winners on September 26, 2021.

Salonga, who had just arrived in New York a week prior to the event, shared photos of the dress rehearsal of Broadway’s biggest night on her Facebook account.

“These are the only pics I took of @thetonyawards dress rehearsal this morning as I wanted to soak in the atmosphere…The atmosphere was electric and emotional,”

“There were not just a few of us that haven’t been inside a theater for 18 months or more, so just walking into one felt like a pilgrimage and an experience we’ll never take for granted again #BroadwaysBack.” Salonga wrote in the caption.

Salonga introduced American singer John Legend who performed a tribute to the Broadway show, “Ain’t Too Proud”.

“Moulin Rouge! The Musical” won ten awards, including Best Musical. “Jagged Little Pill” was honored with awards for Best Book, as well as a win for Lauren Patten. “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” star Adrienne Warren also became a Tony winner.

The award for Best Play went to Matthew López’s “The Inheritance,” which also made Lois Smith and Andrew Burnap Tony winners. “A Soldier’s Play” earned the Tony for Best Revival of a Play, and David Alan Grier received the award for his role in the production.

The Filipina Broadway singer returns to the concert stage via the Dream Again Tour in the United Kingdom next year.
