The LEGO Open MRI is a 4-in-1 design that allows anxious patients to understand and make them comfortable with the medical procedure.

Pinoy radiographer Apollo Exconde’s LEGO toy Open MRI idea has reached a milestone of 10,000 supporters that sent the medical toy design for review to have the idea turned into reality by the toy bricks manufacturer.

The United Kingdom-based Exconde first submitted the Open MRI design to LEGO in 2018. By November 2019, the LEGO Open MRI Idea had reached 5,000 supporters. The 10k supporters’ milestone was achieved on October 20, 2020.

“Congrats on your first ever 10K Club creation! We now officially advance this project to the Review phase,” commented LEGO on Apollo Exconde’s Idea page.

The LEGO Open MRI Idea qualified for the Third 2020 Review covering projects that reach 10,000 supporters between early September 2020 and early January 2021.

The Review Phase will have Exconde’s medical toy project placed under examination by a LEGO Review Board composed of designers, product managers, and other key team members who will build concept models and determine if the concept meets standards for a LEGO product such as playability, safety, and fit with the LEGO brand.

If the toy idea passes the review, the project goes into the Development phase where LEGO model designers refine the product and develop it for release.

Apollo Exconde first proposed the medical toy idea in 2018. Two years later, the Open MRI is closer to becoming a real LEGO toy.

The De La Salle Health Sciences Institute (now De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute) Cavite graduate, designed the LEGO Open MRI to help first-timer, young, plus-sized, anxious patients prepare and understand what they would experience during MRI scanning with the use of LEGO bricks.

It is designed to visualize and show patients what happens in the different stages of the MRI scanning process that helps eliminate any misconceptions and anxiety that might arise from the experience.

“I hope to bring closer these unsung medical imaging scanners to the world, reintroduce them to anxious patients like kids, make it fun and interactive. To exhibit its medical benefits and create consciousness about radiology,” said Exconde in his description of the LEGO Open MRI toy design.

The LEGO Open MRI idea 4-in-1 design also features the following:

  • perfect replica with figures positioned in a wide, unobstructed view so the patient can see how it would look like when they are being scanned, how far their head will go through which makes it easier to explain and answer any questions the patient may have
  • a sliding table feature that does not only show where your head and body will be but it shows as well what coil will be placed and how you will be positioned
  • can be transformed into another scanner replica with the same bricks, and create an Upright MRI, CT scan and DEXA scan

Apollo Exconde is a Lead Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) radiographer who has received the “Incredible Customer Service Award” from London’s Croydon Health Services NHS Trust.
