A Bicol supermarket is literally “going green” with the use of banana leaves for packaging instead of single-use plastics.

Bicol’s Liberty Commercial Center (LCC) in Albay is a 74-year-old commercial establishment that has been using green practices in its operations. Its newest environmental action is reportedly inspired from viral photos from Thailand and Vietnam where vegetables are wrapped using banana leaves.

Albay’s supermarket has been using paper bags and promoting the use of eco-bags, and adds the banana leaves packaging as a new way of applying sustainable practices in its operations.

The commercial center has replaced plastics with banana leaves and abaca ties as a wrapper for agricultural products such as cauliflower, lettuce, broccoli, legumes, and more.

This program is part of the supermarket’s eco-friendly mission which hopes to reduce single-use plastics and to contribute to environmental preservation.

The company has observed that banana leaves also make the agricultural produce last longer since they keep the moisture in while blocking the heat.

LCC Marketing Head Ging Guerra shared that the richness of Bicol region’s agricultural products became their tool in implementing this program.

“We do hope to gradually roll out this program in our other stores, but our priority is sustainability over scope, studying how we may do it well consistently,” Guerra told Rappler.

The program has made an impact on LCC employees who have shown support. The practice was first implemented in March with employees voluntarily bringing banana leaves and abaca ties.
